Over the last few years ecofriendly cars have become common, most car makers talk about just how good for the environment their cars are. It is certainly true that most of the cars on the road are much better in this regard than they used to be. However not all cars can really be considered ecofriendly. So just what is an ecofriendly car?
Answering just what ecofriendly cars are is not easy to explain. Most people think that they know but in many cases cars that they think fit this category really don't. The most obvious example of this is hybrids. Certainly many hybrids are very ecofriendly, however making the assumption that they are somehow automatically more environmentally friendly than other cars would be a mistake. The reality is that a hybrid SUV probably uses more gas than regular internal combustion engine in a modern compact car. Therefore you need to look at the actual fuel efficiency and not the way that the power is produced when you are considering a vehicles environmental impact.
The other thing that you have to keep in mind when you are looking at ecofriendly cars is that just because the car itself produces few emissions does not mean that it is environmentally friendly. The electric car is a good example of this, there is an assumption that there is little to know environmental impact from these. This is of course not true; the electricity has to come from somewhere. Admittedly in most cases there is less impact in producing electricity than in driving a car but it is not always the case. It also may be possible that the electric car needs a lot more power than the regular car offsetting the benefits.
The thing that you really want to look at when you are considering whether or not a car is ecofriendly or not is how much energy it requires for each passenger mile. Ultimately any energy that we produce is going to have some sort of an impact on the environment and this is what we are trying to reduce. What you want is the car that is most energy efficient, this is far more important than how it is powered.
Most modern cars have really improved over the last few years when it comes to reducing emissions so this is much less of an issue than it used to be. Therefore the assumption that an internal combustion engine is the worst option is not really a good one. In a lot of cases you will find that cars with very fuel efficient internal combustion engines are the most environmentally friendly options available. It is going to take some serious research on your part to determine just what the best option really is when it comes to choosing an environmentally friendly car.
