One of the main concerns that people have when they are buying a new car is how much fuel it burns. There are a few reasons for this, gas is very expensive and the emissions do a lot of harm to the environment. Oddly the same people who make sure that they get the most fuel efficient car put very little effort into making sure that they drive in a fuel efficient way.
The most important thing that you can do to save fuel while you are driving is to make sure that you stick to the speed limit. The faster you go the more fuel you will burn and at high speeds this really increases fast. Most people have a tendency to drive at speeds that are over the limit and this wastes a lot of fuel. Try sticking to the speed limit for a little while and see how much fuel you save.
You can also save a lot of fuel by keeping your acceleration nice and smooth. What you want to avoid is running the engine at high revs only to have to back off and slow down again. It is far better to accelerate at a moderate pace so that you can keep from having to run the engine too fast. This will save you an enormous amount of fuel.
A good way to save fuel is to make sure that you plan route before you start driving. Most of us don't really do that and as a result end up not taking the most direct route to get where we are going. Even worse when we run errands we often do them in an order that is far from the most efficient and have to spend a lot of time backtracking. Make sure that you know where you are going before you start driving and the most efficient route to get there and that you have your errands planned in an order that minimizes driving distance.
If it is possible you can save fuel by avoiding driving at the times when the roads are the busiest. Rush hour traffic is bad for a lot of reasons but from a fuel efficiency stand point the problem is that all of that time that you are stuck in traffic not moving you are wasting fuel. If you can avoid driving when you know the traffic will at its worst it is a good idea.
One other thing that you can do to reduce the amount of fuel that you use is to clean out your car. Most people have all kinds of stuff in their car and this really adds to the weight of the vehicle. You will be amazed at how much fuel you can save just by taking all of that extra stuff out of the car. Reducing the weight by fifty pounds or so will have a surprisingly large impact on your fuel economy.
